Deadly boat wreck rooted in alcohol

Posted: Updated:

After a deadly boat crash in North Georgia, one child is dead, another is missing and five people are injured, and the boater who caused it is in jail. 44-year-old Paul J. Bennett of Cumming is charged with boating under the influence.

DNR rangers say he was drunk when he his boat side-swiped a pontoon boat that had 13 people on board. Firefighters pulled 11 people to shore after the crash on Lake Lanier.

Five of them were hurt. A nine year old boy was killed and his 13 year old brother is still missing and presumed dead . The boat that sideswiped them didn't stop.

The search for the 13-year-old continues but the Hall County sheriff says deep water and timber at the bottom of the lake are making the search more difficult.

Bennett is charged with boating under the influence and may be charged with Homicide by vessel and failure to render aid.

Boating under the influence is just as dangerous as driving a car under the influence, and it's just as illegal.

DNR rangers tell us most boating accidents involve alcohol. That's why they constantly patrol rivers and lakes to make sure boat drivers aren't under the influence and putting themselves and others in danger.

If you get caught boating under the influence you can be fined one thousand dollars, sentenced to 12 months in prison and lose your boating privileges.
