Trying to tamp down concerns about government over-reach, President Barack Obama on Wednesday defended U.S. Internet and phone surveillance programs as narrowly targeted efforts that have saved lives and thwarted at least 50 terror threats.

With the swipe of a pen their partnership became official-- Deerfield-Windsor and Albany State University teamed up to offer pre-college classes to high schoolers.

Starting this fall, students can take classes and receive college credit from ASU.

"It benefits everybody.  If I'm a parent and I've got a student at Deerfield-Windsor and I'm looking at four years of college and I can shave off some of the cost by having my student who is college ready and college focused take those courses at Deerfield-Windsor before they even come to Albany State- that is a huge economic advantage and a huge educational advantage," said ASU President, Everette Freeman.

"I think the importance of this is it allows us to keep our top students on our campus, with our teachers and program, and at the same time get the validation of college credit," said Deerfield-Windsor Headmaster Dave Davies.

Teachers have to be certified to be adjunct ASU faculty members. So far English literature and calculus are two classes that will be taught at the college level. But educators plan on expanding.

"The professors here have already been certified by us prior to the signing of the memo of understanding. And we've got an exciting arrangement with the head math administration at Deerfield-Windsor to make sure that Deerfield-Windsor students get the same quality and the same level of education that they would get if they were to have taken the course at Albany State itself," explained Freeman.

Headmaster Dave Davies says this program is also going to help students in the college admission process by showing universities they're ready to advance their education.

Students and parents are just finding out about this new partnership.  And teachers couldn't be more excited.

"The faculty members who have already been approved are just very excited and very gratified that a four year university has said that they're worthy of teaching a college course," said Davies.

Students will have to pay for the college class as a regular credit. But they do have the option of using their HOPE scholarship towards that credit if they wish.
