Posted: Updated:

During the summer months, drownings and near drownings are an ever present danger.

Ten people die everyday from unintentional drownings, according to the CDC. They have tips to keep you safe.

The number one priority for kids in the pool is supervision. You should always have an adult close enough to reach a child in the water.

Next is the buddy system. CDC adds you shouldn't allow kids to swim alone. For adults, you should avoid alcohol before getting in water and learn to swim.

Here are some alarming stats about drowning-

80 percent of those who drown are men. Kids ages 1 to 4 drown the most, and African-Americans are more likely to drown than whites.

Take lessons if you don't know how to swim. If you do know how to swim use caution.
