Students get second chance at graduation

SYLVESTER, GA -

Young adults in Worth County celebrated a milestone Friday night, getting a high school diploma.

Millennium Second Chance Educational Center held its third graduation ceremony this month.Students must be 16 to 21 and either a dropout, deficient in literacy skills, or homeless to qualify for the program.

One of the directors knows how it feels to earn a high school degree when the odds are stacked against you. Nathaniel Lowman said, "It feels terrific. I used to be one of the individuals and I grew up from a big family and out of 12 kids I'm the only son that made it successful and went into the military."

Lowman said the program's purpose is to open a door to college, the military, or a trade. Ninety-eight students graduated from the program's three south Georgia centers this spring.
