It is the law in Georgia to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle, and a new government study shows those laws work at preventing deaths.

The study shows that fewer motorcyclists die in states that require helmets.

On average, about five times as many bikers without helmets die in states with less restrictive laws.

The researchers counted about six thousand deaths over three years of motorcyclists who were not wearing helmets.

Only about 12 percent were in the 20 states that required everyone on motorbikes to wear helmets.

"Running anywhere from 30, 60, 80 miles an hour and then getting into a collision and not having some protection for your head, it is going to result in a sever head injury which will likely result in a death," said Captain Thomas Jackson, Dougherty County Police.

The studied also found that helmet laws save money, too.

States that mandate helmet use save about $500 dollars per registered bike than states with fewer restrictions.
