New York rabbis produce kosher cabbage in GA

MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

A group of rabbis travel thousands of miles to buy South Georgia produce. Three rabbis from New York City fly down to Moultrie every two weeks to buy cabbage.

The cabbage must be produced a special way to make sure the whole process is kept kosher. The rabbis oversee the whole process. They go out to the fields to pick the cabbage they want and then inspect a sample of each bin.

"They will slice each sample and wash it, drain it, clean it and then take the samples of what came out plus the tissue samples and check it under a certain kind of light," says Terry ClarkFarmer.

Every two weeks, the rabbis buy about 85,000 pounds of Georgia cabbage they add to kosher stews with meat and tomato sauce.
