SBC elects first black president

Posted: Updated:

The Southern Baptist Convention is about to have its first African American president.

Reverend Fred Luter Junior is set to become the convention's first black president in its 167-year existence.

Luter's church, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church is based in New Orleans, where he grew up. He and his congregation battled through difficult times following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

One Albany Pastor who knows Luter personally says he is the right man for the Job.

"He is a role model for doing ministry in a time of crisis. He has build a lot of bridges and has preached all over the Southern Baptist Convention. I think it's a great choice and I think he's going to be a great leader," said Sherwood Pastor Dr. Michael Catt.

The Southern Baptist Convention will cast their votes for a new president next week in New Orleans.
