Energy conservation could save tax money

Posted: Updated:

As Dougherty County struggles to balance its budget, one commissioner says he may have a way to do it without raising taxes or drastically cutting services. The key could be cutting energy costs.

Commissioner John Hayes invited a north Georgia consulting company to town Tuesday to talk to county and city leaders about ways the governments could save money by conserving energy and reducing waste. Hayes said, "At some point in time, the cuts will end, and you'll have to seek some other means of keeping the government running and not putting an additional burden on the taxpayers."

The company would perform an audit to identify long-term savings, then could provide the county money up front based on those projected savings.

It's too late to help with the budget the county must pass in the next couple of weeks, but county leaders plan to look into it soon.

The company, BEPC LLC based in Alpharetta, has already helped local governments in other parts of the state identify and realize major savings.
