TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tons of sweet potatoes will be given away Saturday in Tifton, and you can help with the project.

The Society of Saint Andrew collects fresh produce and distributes it to food banks, service agencies, and families.

40,000 pounds of potatoes will be dropped onto the parking lot of Tifton First United Methodist Church Saturday morning.

The organization needs volunteers to help with the giveaway. Georgia Program Coordinator Janet Sack said, "We need a lot of volunteers. The goal would be we would have volunteers sit around the pile throughout tomorrow morning bagging the potatoes so that as the agencies come pick up their share, they're ready to go."

Volunteers will be needed starting at 8:00 a.m. at the church on West 12th Street.

Anyone is allowed to drop by and take home some potatoes. They're part of a donation of 6.3 million pounds of sweet potatoes donated by a grower in North Carolina.
