Dougherty's Byrd heading out of state

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

School is out but some former high school athletes still making those final decisions as to where they'll continue their basketball careers. Such is the case for now former Dougherty High point guard Shawntal Byrd.

The new high school graduate has signed on to play hoops at Lurleen B. Wallace community college in Andalusia,AL. Byrd was a 4 year varsity player and two year starter for Charlene Jackson's Lady Trojans

Jackson says Byrd was the catalyst behind the offense and was her best defender on the court.  Byrd said she's excited to continue to play basketball at Lurleen B. Wallace and can't wait to get started in Andalusia.

Byrd said "It wasn't too big. The city wasn't too big so I know I can maintain my studies and basketball at the same time."

Byrd plans to major in Physical Therapy.
