Gulf South Conference invites new member

Posted: Updated:

The Gulf South Conference is expanding again.

The Gulf South Conference executive committee has unanimously approved inviting Lee University to join the league.

Lee University is currently competing in the NAIA but will apply to join the NCAA Division II level.

A process that normally takes three years. Lee is also expected to add a football program.

Something the Gulf South Conference is needing after losing six Arkansas schools to a new conference two years ago.

The GSC will have six football playing schools this year when Shorter begins playing a conference football schedule.

Florida Tech will join as a football only member next year.

Shorter and Union University have just completed the first of an expected three year transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II level. Shorter and Union will play Gulf South schedules this year but will not be eligible for postseason play.

The University of New Orleans was to join the Gulf South as competing member this year but UNO has opted to remain playing as a Division I independent.
