AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

A federal lawsuit filed by an Americus man could put school board elections on hold in Sumter County.

William Bird says the school board districts are now unconstitutional, because they have not been re-apportioned based on 2010 census numbers.

The lawsuit asks the court for a temporary injunction to halt the upcoming primary elections until new district lines can be drawn.

"We're asking the court to go in and redraw the lines of the nine districts to make them as equal as possible in terms of population," said Bird's Attorney Bill Calhoun. "And in the interim enjoin any further elections of the school board from going forward until the court has had an opportunity to do that and to allow people to qualify from these redrawn districts."

The suit was filed Tuesday against the school board and the elections board in Sumter County.

The suit comes on the heels of a grand jury investigation that criticized the board and recommended its members be kicked out of office.
