Public works building gets new name

Posted: Updated:

City commissioners voted tonight to name the city public works building on North Monroe Street after the late civil rights activist Johnnie Johnson, Sr.

After years of trying to get the city to honor his father. Yaz Johnson is happy his goal has been accomplished.

Johnnie Johnson was fired from his job as a city public works employee in the 1970s after standing up for equal pay and equal rights for black city employees. He won a federal lawsuit against the city.
