Viewpoint: Farewell, David Maschke

We were saddened to hear last week, that school board member David Maschke would not run for re-election to his seat on the Dougherty County School Board.

Maschke has served for 12 years, and has been a relentless watchdog for taxpayers in our school system. Unfortunately, with his departure, we worry that there will be even less accountability on the school board's activities.

We can only imagine the toll it has taken, to serve the community, and your suggestions shot down with 4 votes on the board, that seem less and less concerned with the students they were elected to serve.

Our school board has bogged down in one scandal after another, from the hiring of the Superintendent, to cheating on the CRCT tests, and a board member and principal cheating the federal free lunch program. Anyone would tire of trying to paddle against the current, overcome the poor decisions, and make a difference, in spite of some of our elected leaders.

And you know, that's just what poor leadership wants, to get rid of anyone who rocks the boat.

We certainly want to thank Mr. Maschke for his service, and call on more in the community to step forward and follow his example of community leadership.
