Seminole County farmer hedges $10K Mega Millions win

ATLANTA – A Seminole County farmer has sacked a slice of the record-breaking $656 million Mega Millions jackpot. Stephen Houston of Donalsonville matched the first four winning numbers plus the Mega Ball in the March 30 drawing, netting a $10,000 prize.

He was one of 48 Georgia Lottery players statewide to win a $10,000 prize and one of three winners to purchase winning tickets in south Georgia.

Winning numbers from the historic drawing were: 2-4-23-38-46 and the Mega Ball was 23.

Super B Express #0001, 410 W. Crawford St. in Colquitt, sold the winning ticket. Other $10,000 winning Mega Millions tickets in south Georgia were sold in Donalsonville and Leesburg.

Houston said he was asleep during the drawing and discovered his win Sunday night.

"I took it to the store and the clerk said he couldn't pay me," the father of eight explained. "I knew I had the Mega Ball, but the clerk said, ‘You've got more than that!'"

Houston, who celebrates his 61st birthday Tuesday, is happy to have won the prize, "but it wasn't a great shock," he said.

A farmer with 1,800 acres of peanuts, cotton, corn and wheat said that purchasing a ticket was worth it.

"I'll give it to my wife," Houston said.

He and his wife have seven grandchildren in addition to their eight children.
