Cancer of the colon or rectum is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in America. Phoebe Putney Hospital is now participating in a nationwide study to find out if a popular cholesterol drug may prevent colon cancer from recurring.

Getting screened for colon cancer is one of those things no one likes to do, but it could save your life. Now health officials are trying to find out if they can prevent colon cancer from coming back.

Medical professionals are looking to find a way to prevent colon cancer recurring. Phoebe Putney has joined hundreds of other medical centers across the nation in a study.

"This study was developed in order to see if the use of a statin drug may actually prevent a recurrence of colon cancer," said Steven Ziemba, Director of Clinical Research at Phoebe Putney.

Researchers are looking to see if the popular cholesterol drug, Crestor may prevent colon cancer from coming back.

They are looking to recruit more than 1,700 patients who were diagnosed and treated for early stage colon cancer.

To qualify for the study, a patient must have had stage one or two colon cancer, had surgery, and completed any chemotherapy within the last year.
