Fire destroys Dawson home

Posted: Updated:

DAWSON (WALB) - An historic Dawson home was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.

Luckily, the owner and the one other person inside got out before fire ripped through the house.

A viewer sent us video of firefighters battling the blaze in the 200 block of Crawford Street.

It started around 2:30.

The owner, Laura Schram, runs a beauty salon in the house.  She says she was giving a woman a perm when she heard a popping noise.

She told us she opened a door to a den area and spotted the fire which quickly spread through the house. Luckily, she and her client were able to escape.

"Two city units and 4 county units responded. It took about an hour or more to extinguish it. The fire is still under investigation at this time," said Dawson Fire Capt. Alan Simmons.

Schram says part of the home was built in the 1890's. She lost most of her belongings.

The Red Cross responded to help her.
