Alex Barfield has been an key player in all three state titles
The Terrell Academy Lady Eagles basketball team needs more two wins to win a fourth straight GISA state championship.
The lone senior on the roster, Alex Barfield, has been an key player in all three state titles and this weekend she could end her high school career with a piece of history.
"Coming back with another and then another and gosh I want to bring back one more," said Terrell Academy Forward Alex Barfield.
Terrell Academy's Alex Barfield understands just how special winning a state championship is. While watching her old sister Sam play for Terrell Academy, Alex saw the Lady Eagles come up short time and time again in the championship game.
"It was hard watching them lose. Working that hard the whole season and going up there and losing the last game. Anything that happens from now on I will be happy," said Barfield.
A four year starter at Terrell Academy, Alex Barfield has been happy throughout her high school career.
The Lady Eagles won their first ever state title her freshman year and the next year made it two straight thanks to a final three point shot by Barfield.
"I was out in the yard when I was little just practicing all the time. Actually to be able to just hit it and win a game was just awesome. I really couldn't believe I actually hit that. You could see my face after I hit that. I was like oh, my gosh!" said Barfield.
"We threw her out there and said hey, this shot is yours. Knock it down and we win it right here and she did," Lady Eagles Head Coach Keith Jones said.
Alex Barfield didn't have the game winning shot in last year's come from behind win against then number one Gatewood. Her coach says it was Alex Barfield's play in the 4th quarter that made that comeback possible.
"She has got that ability that very kids out there they can amp their game up in crucial situations. A lot of kids melt under that pressure and she is just the opposite," Jones said.
Terrell Academy can become the first GISA girls basketball team to win four straight titles this weekend. And with that Alex Barfield can become the first player to win four state titles.
"I told her at the beginning of the year I told her you can go out with four straight state titles. Nobody can break that. She knows that opportunity is there. Both of us are looking forward to this Friday and Saturday."
"I have just been telling myself whatever happens I am going to be happy either way because I have had a great career. Whatever happens I am happy," said Barfield.
