Old Inn at the Mall under demolition

ALBANY, GA -

As John Cougar Mellencamp sang, 'The walls... came tumblin' down...' And soon there will only be a pile of rubble where a hotel once stood. The long-awaited Olive garden will be built on the spot.

The walls of what was the Inn at Albany Mall are being torn down today.

The demolition of what was first a Holiday Inn comes a day earlier than originally expected. That means the much-awaited Olive Garden is on its way. One Albany student is excited about the jobs and the food.

"I'm excited because it will give a chance for people who really need the money right now to apply for jobs and start somewhere," said Albany Tech student Quin Williams. "It could be at the Olive Garden. I like to eat. So, it will be something else to eat in Albany. I'm tired of eating the same thing."

Demolition should last around 60 days. Then, construction on the new restaurant will begin.

The store is expected to open in September and will generate around 150 jobs to the area.

It will be located at the corner of Dawson Road and North Westover Boulevard between Ameris bank and Chik-fil-a.
