Ga. lawmakers eye vote on creating charter schools

ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia House is expected to hold a second vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow the state to create and fund charter schools.

The constitutional amendment before lawmakers on Wednesday would clarify state law after a May ruling from the state Supreme Court outlawed the Georgia Charter Schools Commission.

The court ruled that the commission was illegally creating charter schools over the objection of districts.

A House vote on the constitutional amendment earlier this month fell 10 votes shy of the required two-thirds majority to approve it. The Senate has introduced its own version of the legislation as a safeguard in case the measure fails in the House again.

Constitutional amendments must get two-thirds votes in both chambers and win approval from a majority of voters.
