
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Darton College basketball team woke up in the second half and pulled away from the upset bid of Central Georgia Tech 65-41 in the opening round of the GCAA basketball tournament.
The #2 seeded Lady Cavaliers led by one point at half but outscored the Lady Cougars 33-13 in the final 14 minutes of the game.
All-Region player Michelle Mitchell led Darton with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Lauren Johnson scored 16 and Jo Jo Smalls had 10 points off the bench.
Michelle Mitchell said. "It means a big thing to us. Because that is really where we want to go. I think we deserve to make the tournament.
Head coach Lea Henry said. "I knew we would find a way to get it going. Lauren Johnson started stepping up and hitting shots. Michelle started doing her thing in the open floor and Jo Jo was a spark off the bench."
Darton's 20th win of the season sends them to the semifinals to play Georgia Perimeter at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Armstrong Atlantic University.
Georgia Perimeter defeated Albany Tech 72-46 in the opening round.
Top seed South Georgia Tech faces #4 Middle Georgia in the other semifinal Friday at 5:00 p.m.
The Lady Jets advanced Tuesday with a 68-47 win over Chattahoochee Tech.
Middle Georgia eliminated East Georgia 62-36.
