The Lee County Animal Shelter needs your help. They are almost full with dogs and cats and need people to come adopt them. Even if you can't adopt a pet right now, there's a way you can help the shelter.
Since the Lee County Animal Shelter moved to their new home almost 2 years ago, business has been better. But they are still struggling with financial strains.
More than 30 dogs in Lee County are looking for a good home. But in a troubled economy, finding them homes can be tough.
"People don't feel like they can feed themselves let alone a pet in the house and also it costs money to have to go to the vet just like we do the doctor," says Jackie Grigg\Lee County Animal Control.
That is why The Lee County Animal Shelter started collecting cans to raise money to care for these animals.
"We have been collecting cans for quite some time and the citizens they come in and bring their recyclable cans over here," says Grigg.
And the cans are more helpful than you might think.
"$200 dollars every time it is emptied, it helps out because the medicine costs a lot of money," says Grigg.
That money is crucial to keep the animals healthy before getting adopted.
"We don't just let them sit there without having some kind of medication so penicillin sometimes has to be bought and that costs $15 a bottle," says Grigg.
Two pointer dogs will be getting on a plane tomorrow to fly to a rescue in Kissimmee, Florida where they will be adopted.
Grigg says it is good news because pointers are one of the hardest breeds to adopt out.
"People just don't adopt bird dogs, they usually get rid of them because they can't hunt anymore or are gun shy," says Grigg.
She says it takes time to find the perfect pet for your lifestyle.
"You need to make sure that the animal is going to be suite able for you, don't just run in and say oh that puppy is cute and want to adopt it," says Grigg.
But once you find the perfect dog, it just takes a small fee to bring home one of these dogs and give them a home.
The shelter needs people who may be willing to adopt many of the dogs so the shelter can avoid putting them to sleep.
