Dozens of people turned out to apply for a few jobs at the new Leesburg Dollar General Monday.

Applicants came from as far as TyTy and Moultrie for a chance at a job.

Labor Department Officials say they are seeing more job openings, but it's still a competitive market for job seekers.

A job fair Monday morning at the North Slappey Dollar General brought in applicants from as far as Moultrie, willing to drive more than 40 minutes for a job. Labor Officials say any openings are welcome news to job seekers.

"Whether its six jobs, 50 jobs, or 100 jobs, any jobs benefit this area especially with these economic downturns," said Betty White, the Albany Manager of the Department of Labor Career Center.

An hour after the job fair ended, many were still filling out job assessments. It's an employers market with more applicants than needed for every position posted, which is why applicants need to stand out more than ever.

"You've got to make your resume say here I am and once you get that interview you've got to tell that employer something he wants to hear that will make him pick you over anybody else that he would see that day," said White.

Carolyn Threatte knows all too well, she's been looking for a new job for several months.

"The most thing is persistence, that you get your face out there, that you talk to people, let them know you're looking," said Threatte, a job applicant.

She's also busy searching the Labor Department's web site and planning to go back to school to improve her business degree.

"I'm trying to transition over to possibly transcription or in the business area in the medical field," said Threatte.

Labor officials say the more skills you have the better you can position yourself to a potential employer. They say, you can no longer afford to walk into an interview on your skills alone, you must research the company and be able to tell a prospective employer how you can benefit them.

Wild Adventures will hold a job fair Wednesday and Thursday.

The Lowndes County theme park is looking to hire 200 workers.
