ALBANY, GA -
A fallen Albany Police officer is honored at an annual tribute to law officers. A candle was lit for Albany Police officer Terry Lewis Flemming as the Exchange Club recognized a half dozen law officers of the year.
Her death is a reminder of the sacrifice that so many law officers make and that's one reason they're recognized at this annual ceremony.
It was an emotional ceremony as Officers remembered their fallen peer at the exchange club… but there was a bright spot that stood out as six officers were honored, one for saving a life.
Six law enforcement officers were honored today at the Exchange Club in Albany. But before the ceremony started, Fallen APD Officer Terry Lewis-Flemming was remember by her peers and former boss, as Albany Police Chief John Proctor lit a candle in her remembrance.
"It was difficult because it bought back a lot of stuff that you try to put aside. As I said, this is the fourth line of duty death I've experienced and been a part of during my 31 years, almost, in law enforcement and none of it is easy," said Chief Proctor.
Officer Lewis-Flemming died in October while in pursuit of two armed robbers. She and another police officer collided and her car burst into flames.
A fellow Albany Police officer, Corporal Arthur Tyler, was named APD officers of the year today. He likened the honor to winning the Super Bowl, and remembered his fallen colleague with emotion.
"It was a joyous day getting this award, but when he lit the candle and started talking about the fallen officer, It kind of bought me to tears and I was heartbroken a little bit because a person had to lose their life in 2011. It saddens me she had to lose her life," said Cpl. Tyler.
Officer Lewis-Fleming's death is a reminder of the danger law officers face every day. That's why the Exchange Club recognizes the brave and heroic men and women every year. Captain Keith Houston was named officer of the year for the Lee County Sheriff's Office for saving a life in November.
"Once I arrived, I realized that the driver of the vehicle was slumped over the steering wheel. At that time I approached the driver and check him and he did not have a pulse," said Cpt. Houston.
Houston performed CPR on the driver and the man survived. "It's just a great feeling being able to help someone and save a life. It gives you a good feeling inside," said Cpt. Houston.
All officers I talked to today said it was an honor and they hope they can set a great example for their peers.
Chief Proctor told everybody he was very appreciative of the community's support in the aftermath of Lewis-Flemming's death. He said it did not go unnoticed by his police department.
The two men police were chasing when Officer Fleming was killed. 22 year olds Kentrell Butler and Wesley Wilkerson are charged with murder.
