ALBANY (WALB) - 120 - that was the number of votes an amendment to protect Georgia charter schools would've needed to pass today in the state house. It fell 10 shy of that number. But south Georgia charter school leaders tell us they aren't giving up.

The resolution would've given the state the right to approve charter schools instead of leaving the decision up to local school boards.

Officials with Pataula Charter School were in Atlanta on Wednesday for the vote.

They say this measure won't hurt the school through the next school year but they hope lawmakers will come back together and reconsider their votes.

"We're going back to the capitol tomorrow to try and talk to as many representatives as we can that voted no today. Hopefully when they pass the reconsideration, it will come back up for a vote. Hopefully we can sway some of them. We only need 10 more votes," said Pataula Charter Principal Kylie Hollie.

Supporters will try to bring the measure up for another vote.

Pataula Academy was one of 8 charter schools that split $10-million in state money last year.
