ALBANY, GA -
Despite the fact that the last election involving Ward II produced a controversy, an Albany City Commission committee voted 5 to 1 to move forward with drawing new district lines.
Staff advised the commissioners to wait until July, but the committee voted to move ahead.
They expect to start redrawing the maps in March, with advice from a consultant. That process should take three or four months.
The maps will not go into effect until 2013, if they are approved.
In December, Ward 2 Candidate Melissa Strother filed the challenge citing what she considers several irregularities in the election process, including the fact that disqualified candidate Cheryl Calhoun's name remained on the ballot.
Election officials say they followed the law and recommendations from the Secretary of State's Office.
Strother lost the race to Ivey Hines who was sworn in and took his seat on the commission.
