SMITHVILLE (WALB) - A Lee County couple was killed late Saturday night in a mobile home fire.
The blaze started just before 11 o'clock and firefighters found the home in the 1000 block of Highway 377 engulfed in flames.
The victims have been identified as 51-year-old Garry George and 47-year-old Donna Bailey.
Sheriff Reggie Rachals says it appears George was trying to carry his girlfriend out of the burning home before both succumbed to their injuries.
Rachals said family members had dropped the couple off at the home about 30 minutes before the fire started.
He said the GBI and state fire investigators were called in to make sure there was no foul play involved.
The female victim is from out-of-town and her next of kin had not been notified. The names are being withheld until family members are contacted.
As of 2:30 Sunday morning, GBI, sheriff's officials, and Lee County fire crews remained on the scene.
