These students at 'A School for Children' in Albany learn in a non-traditional educational setting. The school's founder and other members of the Coalition for Landscaping Education believe that standard systems don't work for every child because each child learns differently.
"Some children will learn a lot better in a smaller environment and a midsize environment," says Dr. Jewel Faison.
The new organization supports school choice and is working to start a publicly-funded charter school in Albany.
"Many parents just don't know the law the law in terms of education Its very important to have school choice because simply all children do not learn the same way," says Dr. Faison.
"we need people that are creative we need people that can lead."
But the Georgia Supreme Court ruled the State Charter Commission that helped set up charter schools was unconstitutional.
"That prohibited the state from being able to approve charter schools and placed it back at the local level."
The bill passed by the House Education Committee today would fix the problem and allow the state commission to set up charter schools and funnel local tax money into those schools.
"There was some tweaking of the legislation that's what was held up in Atlanta "
Giving hope that the coalition will be able to start a new charter school in Albany.
"We are a grass root charter school because we do have charter schools and they are doing very well however we have not started a charter school by the parents and citizens of Dougherty county."
