AMERICUS, GA -
The Sumter County School system hopes to be honored for a project that has saved nearly $1 million in electricity costs since 2008.
The Georgia Department of Education will nominate up to four schools for federal Green Ribbon designation.
It honors schools for their low energy use, healthy initiatives and environmental education.
Sumter County schools save money by shutting down computers and turning off lights.
The system appointed Mulkey McMichael as it's conservation captain and he has helped officials take the lead in promoting energy savings.
Barbara Watford, Sarah Cobb Elementary School Principal said, "when Mulkey comes through, he comes through about 5:30, 6 o'clock in the morning, just to check the building, are all the monitors off, do you have any air blowing in do you hear any fans, any sounds."
Any Georgia school that receives a Green Ribbon designation will take home at least a share of a $10,000 prize from the Turner Foundation.
Applications for the Green Ribbon program are due for school districts by February 24th.
