AFD burns house to train, fight blight

ALBANY, GA -

The Albany Fire Department burned a South Albany home Thursday morning to help the city continue a battle against blighted properties.

The condemned home in the 17 hundred block of West Lincoln Avenue had been vacant for years.

Instead of the city paying to have it torn down, firefighters burned the home to the ground.

They got real life experience in protecting neighboring buildings.

Albany Fire Department Captain Bruce Bennett said "Anytime you get a big fire, it's out of control. You need, that's one of our main things to protect exposures. That why we're going to set up hose lines, and just work out that and see how it works in different techniques."

Firefighters also trained on arson detection techniques.

The condemned home was leveled before noon.

Neighbors no longer have to worry about it attracting crime problems anymore.
