Illegal citizens might be banned from GA colleges

Posted: Updated:

The State House is considering a bill that would prevent illegal immigrants from going to college in Georgia.

Students who can't get their citizenship verified already have to pay out of state tuition and can't attend the University System's major universities.

The new proposal would ban them from all state colleges. Even technical colleges. ABAC in Tifton says they don't have many students who would be affected.

"The population of students that we have that are undocumented, which could be for several reasons, they may not have gone through the lawful verification process," said ABAC's Public Relations representative Ashley Mock. "They may have not come by and shown it to us or whatever is actually less than one percent of our population."

The policy aims to stop schools from accepting illegal immigrants who would take the spot of a legal citizen.

A House committee postponed a vote on the bill Tuesday.
