Americus Murder defendant pleads guilty

AMERICUS, GA -

The last of six people charged in the murder of an Americus man entered a guilty plea Monday.

Gilbert Brown pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Courtney Jones.

Jones was shot to death in his father's Ford Explorer on Cherokee Street in August 2009.

Brown was accused of setting up the drug buy in an effort to rob Jones and his two passengers Cornelius Lewis and Octavius Ross. That led to a shootout with Lewis in which Jones was shot.

Brown was originally charged with felony murder, but prosecutors say he didn't fire the shot that killed Jones.

Brown was sentenced to 25 years, but will only serve 10 behind bars.

Prosecutors say Brown's five co-defendants have already been sentenced and are serving time.
