Moody Air Force Base plans to close a deal with a private company by spring to build housing for airmen.
Base officials say by 2013, there will be 184 new homes for airmen and senior base leaders.
Eleven units will be located along Stone Road on base and 173 will be off site.
The project is part of a nearly $73-million deal with Balfour Beatty Communities to develop homes for Moody and Dyess Air Force Base in Texas.
The Air Force did a housing market analysis to see how many units were needed.
"In that analysis we determined we needed another 184 family homes for Moody Air Force Base," said Deputy Base Civil Engineer John Eunice. "The majority of Moody airmen live down town but this provides Moody with an opportunity for those who want to live on base be on base."
The goal of privatized housing is to create homes for military members faster than by using military construction alone.
