BLAKELY, GA -
Plans to build a coal-fired power plant near Blakely are called off.
New Jersey-based LS Power will not build the proposed Longleaf energy station in Early County.
It ends a decade-long fight between the power company and some people who live in the area.
Environmental groups including the Sierra Club and Flint Riverkeeper also fought the coal plant.
Many Early County leaders supported the project because it would have created around 100 permanent jobs and close to 1,000 jobs for construction of the plant.
Albany's Director of Flint Riverkeeper Gordon Rogers released this statement on the plant plans being called off:
Flint Riverkeeper is proud to have played a supporting role in the final defeat of the proposed coal-fired electric-generationfacility in Early County known as ‘Longleaf Energy Station'. The plant would have pulled at least 20 million gallons per day (around 30 cubic feet per second) out of the Chattahoochee arm of the highly-stressed Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint watershed; the facility would have competed directly with prescription burn on game plantation and agricultural production lands; the facilitywould have added to the already-overloaded burden of mercury in the Flint's food and gamefish populations. Flint Riverkeeper, and members Don Lambert and Ted Lee, filed independent legal actions that were a small, but meaningful, side-action during the long history of the battle against this plant. Again, we are honored and proud to have been part of this fight for the future of our river, land, and citizens.
