Crime almost always increases during the holidays.  Burglaries are especially common.  Albany Police recently launched a new crime fighting initiative aimed at reversing that trend.  It's called Operation Shock and Awe.

Throughout the holidays, the department will conduct road checks in troubled neighborhoods to keep the bad guys out and to look for all sorts of criminals, from people selling drugs to those with outstanding warrants.

All uniform officers will also work 12-hour shifts to have as many officers as possible on the streets.  And police will increase their presence in areas where burglars hit during the holidays last year.

Officers also want you to help them by keeping a close eye out for suspicious activity in your neighborhood.  If you see something, don't hesitate to call and report it.

Operation Shock and Awe is a great initiative.  We commend APD for going the extra mile to keep us safe this time of year and to keep crooks from ruining our holidays.
