Dougherty County Schools Athletic director Johnny Seabrooks mourns after hearing 14 year old D'Andre Morgan died after collapsing at basketball practice at Dougherty Middle school last MondayS
"I got a phone call from the coach that said they just began basketball practice and about ten to fifteen minutes into the practice he went down. They immediately activated 9-1-1," said Seabrooks.
Morgan died Saturday at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Dougherty County Schools require students to take and pass a physical exam before participating in any physical extracurricular activity.
"If anytime our student athletes do not pass the physical with the doctors that give the physical then we refer them to their private or personal physician for a checkup," said Seabrooks.
The autopsy is incomplete, but a Macon doctor says that he detected underlying heart problems with the boy.
Seabrooks says his staff was unaware of this.
"The only thing that our athletic trainer mentioned to me was when he went back through his physical form, there was some history of Asthma and that's the only thing I've been aware of," said Seabrooks.
Although it won't bring Morgan back, Seabrooks says his deepest condolences go out to the grieving family.
"It's a tragic situation. My prayers got out along with the athletic department and the whole Dougherty County system prayers go out to D'Andre's family," said Seabrooks.
There will be a Memorial Service held Wednesday at Dougherty Middle.
