You may have noticed construction on four new welcome signs in Albany. They are designed to give a better Visual appeal to our major transportation arteries.
They will be located at: Newton Rd, near the Airport. US 82 & Dawson Rd US 19 & Slappey Blvd US 82 & E Oglethorpe Blvd.
We agree with Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful, in charge of the gateway project, that spruced up entrances, will help the city, and is not wasteful spending. Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful applied for a $900,000 beautification project grant in 2005.
The Department of Transportation gave Keep-Albany-Dougherty-Beautiful, more than $300,000, which must be spent soon, or the money will go to another city. Officials say the welcome signs will make a good first impression on visitors.
"The $372,800 we got because we applied for this grant. You have 30 seconds to make an impression on someone new, and that impression stays with them forever," said Judy Bowles of Keep Albany/Dougherty Beautiful.
The signs and the landscaping around them should be finished by the end of December.
Yes, the city will have some cost with this project, and must maintain the areas once the work is done, but we feel most agree, we need all the positive first impressions we can get, and our city's entranceways are certainly one of them.
