In May 2009, the Pilgrim's Pride plant in Coffee County closed. It was a huge economic blow that cost 900 workers their jobs; and the trickle-down effect cost the area as many as four thousand jobs.
Thankfully, the plant re-opened in January and is now thriving. And now, the plant's been named the Employer of the Year for 2011 by the Georgia Department of Labor-Vocational Rehabilitation program.
The Douglas Plant works closely with the Valdosta Transition center to provide jobs for inmates transitioning from prison back into society.
The Labor Department says the program offers a solution that helps break a pattern of repeat criminals, and ultimately lessens prison overcrowding.
We congratulate the Douglas Pilgrim's Pride plant for its success and its innovative approach to providing jobs to those who might not otherwise find work. The Labor Department honor is well-deserved!
