JACKSON, GA (WTOC) -
Troy Davis was executed by lethal injection and pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga.
Davis was found guilty in 1991 for killing Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989.
According to the Associated Press and several witnesses, these were the final words from Davis just before being put to death:
"I'd like to address the MacPhail family – [to] let you know, despite the situation you are in, I'm not the one who personally killed your son, your father, your brother. I am innocent."
"The incident that happened that night is not my fault. I did not have a gun. All I can ask ... is that you look deeper into this case so that you really can finally see the truth," Davis said.
"I ask my family and friends to continue to fight this fight. For those about to take my life, God have mercy on your souls and may God bless your souls."
The execution came after a last-minute appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, which was denied. A temporary delay had been issued to await the high court's response to that appeal.
There were more than 20 years of appeals and efforts to get the case retried. The Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole on Wednesday denied the request to reconsider its decision to deny Davis clemency. Davis was denied clemency on Tuesday.
Two other requests were made by his attorneys on Wednesday morning.
A request was made to Georgia prison officials to allow Davis to take a polygraph test to prove his innocence, but prison officials denied him the test.
Another defense attorney also filed a last-minute appeal on Wednesday morning in Butts County Superior Court, claiming the ballistic testing that linked Davis to the shooting was flawed.
