SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
The sister of death row inmate Troy Davis has launched a campaign Friday on Change.org asking for clemency.
Davis was convicted in 1991 of the fatal shooting of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989. He is scheduled to be executed on Sept. 21.
A clemency hearing is scheduled for Sept. 19.
Kimberly Davis, Davis's sister, launched the campaign on Change.org and more than 100,000 people, including 3,000 Georgians, have joined the campaign, according to a Change.org news release.
"There is too much doubt in this case to execute Troy," said Kimberly Davis, in a statement. "Following Troy's trial, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony. I just can't see why the state of Georgia would want to execute a man when there is so much uncertainty in his case. The world is watching Georgia."
Nearly 50 Georgia Congressmembers have also sent their own petition for clemency.
