Even the American Legion Post 30 hasn't been immune to criminal activity.
In one of the lowest of low thefts by criminals, thieves stole the metal rebar used to keep one thousand American flags in place for the Legion's Patriots of Field Flags, held annually at the Albany Mall.
The June theft was particularly disturbing because of planned activities to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.
The generous kindness of strangers has now helped to ensure that the memorial will take place, as planned.
Henry Oliner, President of General Steel in Macon, donated the rebar pieces needed, one thousand of them, to make sure the flags go up again this September. A generous, but anonymous donor is paying for it.
Volunteers will put up the flags September 3rd for the event and on the 9th, a concert by the group Relapse will take place. And as planned, our community, along with many others across the nation, will now be able to honor the memory of those we lost on September 11th.
Thanks to all who are helping to keep this very special community activity going, in spite of those who tried to blow out the flame.
