Hospital donates A/C to doctor's office: staff awaits repair

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -An Albany pediatrician's office we told you about earlier this week is still waiting for air conditioner repairs after thieves stole the A/C units.

They're able to stay open while they wait thanks to a generous donation.

The sound of air blowing through portable A/C units filled the doctor's office Thursday. Employees and patients at South Central Pediatrics would love to see main units spew out ice cold air instead. Thieves snagged all three air conditioners over the weekend.

"If they could have come in here to see how hot it was they wouldn't have stolen those units," said mother, Tye Brown.

Brown brought her son in for a check-up. She and other families are glad Dr. Sandra Cheevers is open after sweltering temps caused her to close Tuesday afternoon.

"It's hot but we just need to be here to see the doctor today," Brown added.

Dr. Cheevers says this whirlwind hit at a bad time. The beginning of the school year brings a strong current of patients through her door.

"Sports physicals are coming in galore, so I need to be here to take care of that," said Dr. Cheevers.

She thanks Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital staff who provided five portable air units. They helped cool off the waiting area, patient rooms, and office space. Dr. Cheevers closed Tuesday afternoon and shut the lights off to give the units time to cool the building.

As staff slugs out another lethargic day in the heat, the beads of sweat will continue to run in hopes of getting a new air-conditioner that will soon run too.

If repairs aren't made soon, Dr. Cheevers worries the extended period of heat may harm her computer server which has important medical records.

The landlord says it's taken a while to get repair cost estimates and deal with the insurance adjuster. Hopefully new units will be installed next week.
