They've been calling folks and asking for their date of birth and social security number.
The scammers say they're trying to set up appointments with their local community action agency to pay their utility bills for two months.
Some victims even showed up at Coastal Plain Area Economic Opportunity Authority in Sparks expecting help only to find out they got scammed.
"The utility bills are just beyond reason now with the heat as bad as it is," said Phyllis Cannington, the Coastal Plain coordinator. "Of course when they feel like there's a chance of getting a little bit of relief from their utility service they're more than willing to give this information."
Some of the victims also gave out their bank account numbers.
You should never give out that kind of private information over the phone.
