Dougherty County School Superintendent Joshua Murfree recently held a ridiculous news conference during which he implored state investigators to ignore anonymous tips they get about possible CRCT cheating. He also urged teachers who know anything about cheating to come to him instead of investigators.

That attitude is the exact reason we need an independent investigation. Teachers must be assured they can be completely honest without having to worry about retribution from superiors. Taxpayers need to know there's no chance that administrators will cover up evidence of cheating.

One of the first things state investigators did once they were appointed was to set up an anonymous tip line. They know those tips could be the key to finding out whether cheating occurred by leading them to ask the right questions of the right people.

Those investigators will be in Albany soon to question educators about possible CRCT cheating. We hope they get to the bottom of the issue once and for all. We also hope school officials keep their noses out of the investigation.
