Applying to medical school takes more than just a great GPA and MCAT score these days.
Real world experience is just as important.
The South West Georgia Area Health Education Center hosted a medical forum at Phoebe Conference Center Thursday called "What's up, Doc?"
Deans from Georgia medical schools were there to tell pre-med students how to get a leg up on the competition when applying to med school.
And they say the Pathway to Medical School Program is a good start.
"That program is a one month residential program and any student who goes through our program and then applies to medical school, 89% of them have gotten into medical school, so I feel like it is very beneficial as far as outcomes," Pam Reynolds, SW GA Health Education Center.
The program consists of hundred hours of intensive physician shadowing and sixty hours of community research.
Thursday's seminar was taped and will be posted online for a year.
