One arrest in Albany murder, but manhunt continues for killer

One Albany man is jail  charged with murdering an Albany State University student, but the suspected triggerman is still on the run.

The manhunt continues for 22-year old Joshua Johns.  Police say he's armed and dangerous. They're also looking for other suspects.

Police say Joshua Johns shot and killed 20 year old Bruce Mullen during an armed robbery attempt. Today they arrested another man they say was an accomplice in the robbery.

Albany Police say 26 year old Stephen Lewis took part in an armed robbery that led to the shooting death of 20 year old Bruce Mullen Wednesday night at Hidden Oaks Apartments. Lewis is charged with murder, armed robbery, and gun offenses. Mullen was shot in the chest at least once. Police say they recovered Lewis' gun, but they do believe it was the one used in the murder. 22 year old Joshua Johns is the man they believe killed Mullen, and he is still on the loose.

At Hidden Oaks Apartments Friday, a Gang Unit Patrol Car sat near the entrance. Police officers scoured the area, looking for Johns, who they say is known to frequent the apartments.

At the East Side Grocery across Mock Road, owners say Police are frequent visitors.

East Side Grocery owner Ralph Aslam said "Yeah, they been coming. Law people, they've been coming round us. They've been talking to us. Telling us nothing to worry and all that."

But people living at the apartments tell us they are worried,  no one wanted to talk to us on camera because they said they were afraid with Johns still on the loose. One student we talked with said she decided to move because of the murder.

Police are urging people to give them tips to find Johns. With two murders in Albany this week, city leaders are also looking for ways to stop the violence.

Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards said "We're asking the community to help. Help with giving our young people things to do. Help with jobs. These are the things that will help our community be one safer and healthier."

In 1988 Albany was labeled the murder capital of the nation, with 27 murders, a higher per capita homicide rate than New York city. This year there have been 7 murders.

Edwards said "Certainly we are not at that pace, but we don't want any homicides period. We want to be known as the murder free capital of America."

There may have been others with Johns and Lewis when Investigators say they robbed and killed Bruce Mullen. Police say they are looking for other persons of interest, but Joshua Johns is their main focus now.

Joshua Johns, who is know as "Lil Flick" is 5-foot-3 inches tall, and weighs 129 pounds. He is only 22, but he has a long rap sheet.   Arrested six times for burglary, plus arrests for criminal trespass, theft by deception and theft by receiving, obstruction of a police officer twice, and arson. Today the charge is murder, and he is the key subject in a city wide manhunt.

If you have any information about Joshua Johns, Police urge you to call 9-1-1 or CRIME STOPPERS at 436-TIPS. You could earn a reward.
