A public relations specialist from Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany won a National Image Award for Meritorious Service from the Department of Defense.
Pamela Green-Jackson was recognized for her community service as founder and CEO of Youth Becoming Healthy. She started that project in 2004 to fight childhood obesity after the death of her brother.
The Defense Department says childhood obesity is a national security threat because so many teens can't meet the military's fitness requirements.
"At the time that I started it, it was just a way to give back and educate the community about the issue of childhood obesity. And the health complications later on. I had no idea at the time that it would progress to become a national threat," said Green Jackson.
Green Jackson was presented her award at SeaWorld Sunday. She also won the Department of Defense's STEM award last year.
