Viewpoint: Cacophonous commercials?

Posted: Updated:

Have you ever noticed how loud commercials are, compared to the programs on some TV stations and cable companies?

Well, that will soon be a thing of the past, and we say it's about time. The president signed the CALM Act, into law last Wednesday.

CALM stands for Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation, and this empowers the FCC to regularize the volume between programming and commercials.

The CALM Act was approved in the House Dec. 3. and the bill directs the FCC to regulate commercial volume per the recommendations adopted last November.

It gives cable operators and broadcasters a year from the law's adoption to comply.

WALB and many stations have regulated our audio output for years, but for the rest, equipment must now be purchased to comply with this new law. It is interesting that Congress waited until after the election to push for this change, so they could take advantage of loud commercials for themselves.

The country will finally get the relief they deserve from the annoyance of blaringly loud television commercials.

Consumers will no longer need to dive for the 'mute' button during commercial breaks.
