Americus man on trial for murder

Americus-- An Americus man is found guilty for strangling his girlfriend last year.

23-year-old Benji Cortez Sanders has been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for the April 2002 murder of 25-year-old Shelia Freeman. The jury deliberated two hours this afternoon before finding Sanders guilty of murder, felony murder, and aggravated battery.

On the morning of April 30th, Sanders called police requesting help for Freeman who had stopped breathing. He told police the two had been fighting. The jury found him not guilty on the charge of child cruelty.
