WALB would like to take a moment to honor two south Georgia athletes who have earned big honors.

Cook High baseball star Kaleb Cowart was named the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, a big honor for the switch-hitting Cowart.

He led the Cook High Hornets to a state runner-up finish in the AA playoffs.

His batting average this year is the second highest in Georgia history and his pitching record was 10-1.

Cowart followed up his player of the year award by being selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Kaleb also has signed a scholarship to play baseball at Florida State.

While Kaleb Cowart's baseball career is just beginning, former Miami Dolphin Bill Stanfill was a big part of the famed no name defense that led the Dolphins to two Super Bowl titles.

The Miami Dolphins franchise this season will induct Stanfill and his former Georgia teammate Jake Scott into the Dolphins Ring of Honor.

The Cairo native owns part of three Miami Dolphin team records for quarterback sacks.

Bill Stanfill's play was noticed by his peers with four straight Pro Bowl selections and he was twice named a first team all-pro.

A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, WALB hopes the day will soon comes when Bill Stanfill is inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
